I am a Co-founder and Managing Director of Batu Batu - Pulau Tengah, a sustainably-minded off-grid island retreat in Malaysia with a focus on generating profits through tourism to create positive impacts in the local area. I am also the President and Founder of Tengah Island Conservation (TIC), a Malaysian non-profit biodiversity conservation NGO working within the Johor Marine Park. Batu Batu and TIC together, were honoured to be named winners of the WTM World Responsible Tourism Silver Award for Best in Conservation & Wildlife (2019).After completing my degree in Social Anthropology at Downing College, University of Cambridge, I spent ten years within the financial services industry in London before returning to Malaysia and switching sector to set-up and run the family-owned Batu Batu island project.I have a particular interest in creating tourism products that support biodiversity and local communities and advocating for tourism as a force for good. As a native Johorean, I find particular pleasure in developing projects in my home State. As part of this passion, in 2019 our team co-created KakakTua Guesthouse & Community Space in Mersing, a tourism-for-communities project. I am a founding steering committee member of Sustainable Travel Mersing, a multi-stakeholder initiative supporting the development of Mersing District as a sustainable tourism destination and Co-Chair of the Sustainable Tourism Network for Malaysia.
