About Cher Li
I am a Professor of Economics at Aston Business School (Birmingham). I have an extensive background in higher education, having previously worked at Nottingham University Business School, Imperial College Business School, and the Universities of Glasgow and Strathclyde. I am a Research Fellow at the Nottingham Centre for Research on Globalisation and Economic Policy (GEP, University of Nottingham). I have consulted widely for government departments/agencies, such as the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS), UK Trade & Investment (UKTI), Scottish Enterprise, etc.As an expert in the economics of innovation and business performance, I serve as a member of the UK government Expert Peer Review Group (PRG) and also a member of the Council of Experts for the Innovation and Research Caucus - a leading think tank funded by the UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) to provide thought-leadership as well as inform innovation policy and practice. As an economist by training, my research primarily centres on innovation, intellectual property, standards, and firm productivity. I have successfully secured funding for my research projects from organisations such as the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), UK government departments (e.g., BEIS, UK Trade and Investment now the Dept for Business and Trade, Scottish Enterprise), and international organisations. Most recently, I am a Co-investigator on the £2.5 million ESRC project - Transforming Productivity: Coordination and Evidence Hub (the PrOPEL Hub). This project aims to convert academic insights on productivity into practical solutions and design business support interventions to address the UK's productivity challenges. In 2019, I received the prestigious BSI Standards Makers Awards for Education about Standardisation from the British Standards Institution, in recognition of my teaching and research in standards, innovation, and productivity.
