What is a GRACE Coordinator? In May of 2013 DHS submitted a request to the Ways and Means Committee to apply for a 5-year, cooperative grant to fund a program called GRACE, Growing Resources and Alliances through Collaborative Efforts. This effort, based on the “Diligent Recruitment” model, is intended to improve foster care efforts for the children in our care. The request was approved and the grant was awarded to DHS through the federal Children’s Bureau. Geographically, the grant impacts the southern regions of Oregon, covering 11 counties and one-third of the children in foster care in Oregon. As a result, the GRACE Coordinator position was created. My position is one of six around the state representing the various districts in Oregon. I am responsible for district 10 which covers Deschutes, Jefferson and Crook counties. As a GRACE Coordinator, I am to recruit and retain foster care families, secure and maintain community partnerships and serve as a community representative promoting overall community support. After developing a successful local program, I was invited to participate in statewide efforts. Today, I manage the tri-county program, participate in statewide planning for recruitment and retention, and provide technical assistance to other districts around the state.
