Many moms are lonely, insecure, feel beaten down often, and realize more people judge our parenting than other children's parents. Friends disappear. They quit calling. When your child has disabilities, we are treated as if we have come in from the cold without a coat. Have you felt this way? We fear the future. The challenges are many. Most families end in divorce and feel alone. We are about to celebrate 56 years of marriage and I wish all families could learn how to work together and keep their families together. It is possible to stay married and have continued to support each other and your special child. Most problems that separate our relations are lost over the breakdown of communications. I love sharing experiences and how to help others go from despair to hope, challenged to manage, from alone to supported. Over the many years, I have been asked so many questions about what families go through, and continue to answer them on Quora.com. I remember the sleepless nights, afraid my son would aspirate in the night. . . sad when I was told to put my son away and forget I had him . . . or the hospitalist who told me to sign a DNR in ICU without letting me talk to a doctor (and that was 5 years ago). . . and being told "He has NO quality of LIFE!" . . .and the teachers who did not have time for him because he was easy to ignore while others would run away if they did not hold on to them . . . and being asked. "Have you ever thought about potty-training?" (when he was 10 years old) Oh, and the 90 miles each way for therapy that cost more than we made! I understand the pain and the love of a special son in our lives who has been overlooked by some who thought he knew nothing, only to be told "He is so smart! He can add in his head!" (all in the same day)... The joy of hearing him ask how I was as I was watching him suffer from one surgery after the other! (He had NEVER asked about any person or thing and he was 47 years old near death!) Joy through the waiting rooms to know he made it through another day! I have loved sharing how families with special needs children need some extra love and understanding of their unique problems.I have done some study on this and having lived this life, can help others with courage, hope, humor, and humility. The classes opened up many doors to help others.In October, I was at a Women's Conference and had a wonderful time sharing with this group. These loving people often have to quit work to care for parents or special needs children. Having been a caregiver most of my life, I truly understand their issues. I write about these issues, as well as, speak and podcast about this. My efforts are to help caregivers learn how to get help, find resources, and information they need to best care for themselves and their loved ones. Many who work struggle to do it all and have employers who do not realize their challenges. I speak and write about ways businesses can support these dedicated workers. I have also taught school districts special education teachers and families how to help these people improve their roles. This has also led me to earn copywriting certification. I have 2 solo books, been in 16 more, while helping people with their writing needs. These all fit together to help write health articles as a certified Health Copywriter. I have a son with special needs and helped with my own parents, hosted a live show weekly for three years interviewing caregivers to find what we need to teach younger people to better prepare them to care for their parents while caring for themselves. The baby boomers are often caring for parents, helping with kids or grandkids, and their own health suffers. My goal is to help turn this around with better understanding and preparation.My degree is in Communications, produced a video used on TV and 2 Universities' Special Education classes. Life is not about one thing, but many. Six of the books I participated in became International Best Selling books. I feel privileged to reach wide audiences with podcasts, writing courses, and helping families with special needs stay together.
