As a child and teen, I grew up on the east coast of Canada in Cape Breton Island. I had this way of being real, being myself. I don’t ever recall that feeling of trying to be someone other than 'who I was' and honestly, I chalk that up to not being smart enough to know how to do that? ;) Back then, I’d have no clue that THAT would be my “secret weapon” in life to guide me through my career. That way of just being real, me, true to my core. Honestly, I think the best compliment I’d ever received was from an old elementary school friend, who later became a new connection on social media. He said, “Cheryl, my most prominent memory of you was you were the person that talked to everyone. You never categorized people by their cliques. You were a friend to all and people loved that about you.” So that secret weapon + career? Well, I’m an ex-ad agency ‘suit’ (that maybe wore a pantsuit twice in my life) turned recruiter. I changed my career path in 2020 because I felt there was no better year to take a risk. That risk turned out to be the best career decision for me. But leading up to that career change, there were many years of feeling overwhelmed, scared and alone - knowing deep down I knew there was a more fulfilling career ‘out there’ for me but not knowing how to make the leap (or not knowing where I fully wanted to ‘leap to’). So if that feels like you, I'm here you; so that you feel less alone and my hope is to be able to support, guide or network your next step to a career that you never thought was possible. I’m passionate about learning. Being a student and having a sense of wonder for most things around me is what makes me feel truly alive (and loving what I now get to do for a ‘j-o-b’). I’m most in awe of the bravery it takes to leave your family, friends and country behind in search of a better future, life and career for them and yourself.
