Responsible for the health and well-being of all animal subjects used in research or teaching activities at UAF. This role includes the oversight of husbandry and animal housing. The UAF Attending Veterinarian is also the Director of the UAF Animal Resource Center (ARC). ARC is the operational component of theUniversity's centralized animal research program and resided within the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research.

Provided relief work on a regular basis to several small animal practices in the Northern California, Wisconsin and Alaska. Worked mainly emergency/critical care shifts. Responsibilities include diagnosing and treating diseases and injuries of domestic and exotic animals. Experience with emergency surgery.

Assist the seven-member, presidentially appointed Commission in its efforts to strengthen Arctic research, ties to the State of Alaska and international partners. Duties include: assisting the Executive Director and Commissioners in developing and administering programs to review Arctic research topics and agencies research programs; developing scientific and technical reports, recommendations, white papers, and publications of the Commission; organizing and executing meetings of the Commission and other Arctic research meetings, workshops, conferences, and symposia sponsored or co-sponsored by the Commission including working with the Chair to develop an agenda and working with other Commission staff to develop minutes of the meeting, and follow-up communications as directed by the Commission; identifying important Arctic research achievements, gaps and opportunities for improved research policy and coordination; and assisting in establishing and carrying out the Commission’s operating policies and procedures.

Responsible for ecological, biochemical and physiological research in arctic wildlife species. Extensive travel related to involvement in numerous national and international advisory forums (ICARP II, IWC Climate Change advisory panel, NOAA/NMFS Open Water Meeting, etc.). Duties included managing a comprehensive, North Slope-wide wildlife health program investigating the health of subsistence and other wildlife species populations and the safety of subsistence foods. Responsibilities also included grant writing, evaluation of environmental impact statements and other environmental documents, preparation of technical documents and publications, and interaction and cooperation with federal, state, industry and academic representatives/programs. Experience with NEPA, MMPA, ESA, Oil Pollution Act, Migratory Bird Act and the Arctic Oil and Gas General Permits. Advisor to the North Slope Borough Fish and Game Management Committee, Joint Commissions of the Inuvialuit Game Commission and the North Slope Borough and Alaska Eskimo Whaling Commission, member of the Polar Bear Technical Committee, the Scientific Committee of the International Whaling Commission, NSB Science Advisory Committee and the Science Advisory Panel of the North Pacific Research Board. Lead responder and logistics coordinator for the NMFS Stranding Response Network on the North Slope.

Conducted doctoral research involving health assessment of Inupiat harvested bowhead whales. Emphasis placed on heavy metal and biomarker analyses, histology, pathology and aging in marine mammals. Responsible for veterinary clinical and diagnostic duties for the captive wildlife at UAF, including laboratory animals and a range of arctic species.

Provided volunteer veterinary services for helicopter wolf captures in Denali and Yukon Charley National Parks.

Member of committee responsible for establishing and maintaining the proper and humane use of animals at UAF according to government and state requirements. Reviewed and approved all university activities involving animals, conducted annual reviews of ongoing activities and biannual inspections of facilities involved in animal use.

Taught WLF 305 “Wildlife Diseases”, a semester long course covering basic pathological processes and wildlife diseases. Two weekly necropsy lab sections were conducted, during which, students received practical experience performing wildlife necropsies.

Provided emergency work on a regular basis (full time during 1998-99 and one weekend per month and holiday coverage 2000-02) in a high volume, state-of-the art emergency clinic in the Bay Area. Experience with emergency surgery.

Participant in an internship program in a twenty-six doctor, full service general medicine/referral/teaching hospital. Average hospital caseload: 100-150 cases/day. Rotations include internal medicine, surgery, emergency medicine and specialty areas.
