Although she was born and lived most of her life in Vancouver she has experienced life in Northern BC, Sunshine Coast, Yukon, Manitoba, and Ontario which she attributes to her ability to adapt to new cultural dynamics, work under high pressure and maintains an optimistic outlook on life. For the past twenty years she has worked intermittently in business management as a proprietor in the restaurant and food service industry. Cheryl has worked in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside grass-roots and non-profit organization the Vancouver Native Health Society (VNHS) for the past nine years. Her goals at VNHS are to instill and deliver teachings of medicine wheel through her work as a coordinator of a land based healing project, Tu’wusht and previously through an aboriginal cancer awareness and teachings program. Both programs emphasize the importance of food for healing. With the belief that food is medicine and being mindful of the state of our food systems and declining health of Indigenous peoples in Canada Cheryl has found it important to be a part of the Working Group on Indigenous Food Sovereignty (WGIFS) and has been a member since it began. She actively practices food sovereignty with Vancouver’s Indigenous community by connecting them to the land, food, culture and community. Over the years she has participated in collaborative WGIFS meetings, helped with logistical and feast coordination for the Wild Salmon Caravan and the Indigenous Food and Freedom School. Aside from her work with VNHS Cheryl has maintained a working relationship with UVIC Institute on Aging and Lifelong Health since 2013. As a Master Trainer for UVIC she delivers Self-Management workshops throughout BC’s Indigenous communities, programs that aim to improve the health of individuals through life skills introduced.
