A Night to Remember Prom is a first-class prom for developmentally disabled or physically-challenged high school students ages 15 -22 years old who are partnered with mainstream students from area schools who apply to be paired with them as their hosts for the evening. A Night to Remember Prom gives these students free prom experience designed just for them. Each student is truly an Honored Guest, and provided free of charge with a prom dress or tuxedo, hair styling and make-up by professional cosmetologists, a corsage or boutonniere, a tiara and jewelry, a ride in a limousine, a walk down the red carpet photographed by paparazzi and cheered by fans. The prom is a night of dinner and dancing, music and entertainment. Each guest receives a framed photo as a memory of this special night and a gift bag.In 2011, Chula Vista residents Rob and Cheryl Shields organized a prom for high school students with challenges such as autism, Down Syndrome and cerebral palsy. They sought to integrate students with special needs (“Honored Guests”) with "Hosts", and to develop understanding and new friendships between them. With eleven-year old triplets of their own, none of whom have special needs, Rob and Cheryl's annual event has inspired and impacted thousands of parents, teachers, counselors and volunteers who share their goods and services to impact the lives of hundreds of students each year. Their 501(c)3 organization receives charitable contributions used to reimburse actual expenses of each year's event. Over the past 4 years, over 2,500 students have attended this event. They are expecting 850 students from 70 schools to attend in 2015.
