CurrentThere is a growing national consensus about the importance of teaching Design Thinking as an essential element of science education. Twenty six states worked with major employers to create a Next Generation Science Standard (NGSS) which requires that engineering design be integrated into the structure of science education by raising design to the same level as scientific inquiry in K-12. Teachers facing implementation of NGSS (and other similar standards) in the next two years must rapidly become familiar with the design process, a discipline that has not seen widespread attention in schools and colleges to date and is difficult to teach. Students who participate in formal learning of design in the classroom and also in informal forums such as competitions, after school programs, and 4-H, need a means for showcasing the design skills they’ve acquired as they progressed through their scholastic and professional careers. CredentialED has developed and secured Intellectual Property that satisfies both needs: teachers are able to rapidly acquire skills for creating effective curricula for the teaching of design, and student progressive progress and skill attainment are catalogued as they complete their Design projects providing for credentialing of skills for students to present to admissions officers, registrars and prospective employers. Data acquired and coded will also support learning research on how better to prepare all students, including women, underserved minorities, those requiring special accommodation, and returning military to enter design-based fields.
