Given the magnitude of the unprecedented historical events facing the modern workforce and society, GOSHRM’s members and the businesses they support are facing unique challenges, such as job and economic loss, lack of access to professional development & services, health and emotional trauma, etc.~ SOLUTION ~GOSHRM’s mission is to elevate people and workplaces through education, connections, and service. CurrentINSTITUTE OF CERTIFIED PROFESSIONAL MANAGERSWhile working for AT&T in 2000, I became certified by the Institute of Certified Professional Managers (ICPM). In 2003, I was asked to join the ICPM Board of Regents. After joining, I became Secretary, Vice Chair, and eventually, Chairman of the Board for 2 years, resigning in 2012. Due to my service, I was extended honorary lifetime membership and certification.~ PROBLEM ~ICPM was founded by two trade associations focused on developing managers and leaders, the National Management Association (NMA) and the International Management Council (IMC).It was created to provide a formal program of management training to first-line supervisors and to enhance recognition of management as a profession. Initially – before my participation - ICPM served the United States only. Then, it was realized that there was an international need for the education & certification as well.Simultaneously, it was discovered that there was a gap in leadership talent in the U.S. as managers retired and the next generation was not prepared to replace them..~ SOLUTION ~As Chairman of the Board, I was integral in the organization’s Strategic Planning. In recognition of the issue in the U.S. and in partnership with NMA, ICPM identified leadership competencies and expanded their certification programs to address them.Concurrently, ICPM reached out internationally and expanded to a worldwide market.~ OUTCOMES ~During my tenure, a new management credential “Certified Supervisor” was created for entry level managers to succeed in their first management role.Also, significant expansion was made into the Mediterranean, Middle Eastern and North African markets, which DOUBLED the revenue of the Institute of Certified Professional Managers.To date over 15,000 have been certified in over 30 countries worldwide.
