The mission of "School on Wheels of Massachusetts" is to educate children impacted by homelessness by providing academic support and one-on-one mentoring so children can reach their full potential.” We provide customized educational support services to help children become stronger, more confident students, and self-sufficient adults."School on Wheels" is the only organization in Massachusetts providing one-on-one mentoring and educational support services exclusively for students living in temporary housing: shelters, motels, and transitional apartments. We provide the following services/resources for students in grades Kindergarten through college at multiple program sites in Southeastern MA.*Afterschool one-on-one tutoring/mentoring*Summer enrichment programs*Backpacks, school supplies, and summer reading bags*Educational Centers with computers, i-Pads, books, and resources for students and tutors *Parent workshops focused on helping children find success in school, parent/teacher meetings*Partnering with schools and parents to advocate for academic servicesSpecialties: Customized, long term, educational support services for children of all ages impacted by homelessness. When our students move we move with them. Students and families can remain enrolled in our program for as long as they need and request our services.

Cheryl Opper founded School on Wheels of Massachusetts in 2004 out of her home in Easton, MA after reading an article in Family Circle magazine about a School on Wheels program in Los Angeles, CA. School on Wheels of Massachusetts is one of three programs in the United States. This unique program provides customized, one-on-one educational support services and academic resources for children impacted by homelessness. In 2004 School on Wheels worked with 20 students at 2 program sites and the yearly budget was $20,000. In 2013 School on Wheels worked with 250 children at 12 program sites and the yearly budget was $445,000. Most of the funding comes from private resources: corporate, foundations and individuals.
