Having successfully served as the interim Marketing Director, our CMO asked me to stay on the marketing team when the Marketing Director returned from her leave of absence. My focus was on driving impactful retail presentations with our department store, chain, and mass partners (Macy’s, Kohl’s, JCP, Belk, Bon-Ton, Target, etc.), both through brick-and-mortar and online channels. My role included:-- Leading a multi-million dollar project to reinvent Jockey’s presence at retail-- Creating the process and structure to support the wholesale e-commerce business-- Building new relationships with account visual and marketing teams to achieve greater placement online and in-store-- Guiding the direction and development of all marketing collateral within the wholesale channel

What started out as a 6-8 week interim position turned into 8+ months! I was selected by executive leadership to assume this role during a critical stage of rebranding and marketing campaign launches for the US business. (The true titleholder had to take an unexpected leave of absence.) During this time, I worked directly for the CMO.Under intense time pressure, I consistently delivered the materials that our sales team needed in order to get product and marketing placement with accounts. I also provided direction to our agencies regarding pitches for new multi-million dollar business, worked closely with the market research team, directed creative teams on graphic design and copy solutions, and coordinated assets for multiple product marketing campaigns.

I was only in this role a few months because of being asked to serve as interim Marketing Director (above). However, while I was in the role full-time, I researched and quantified new business opportunities for the executive team and worked with the President of Jockey North America to roll out a new 18-month planning process.

An evolution of my previous role, this new title recognized how much my responsibilities in the International Division had grown. I led the day-to-day operations of the division and was the primary contact for our partners in India, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand, as well as Jockey offices in Germany, the UK, and Hong Kong.The goal of our team was still to support a strong and consistent global brand image while adapting to the 120 countries where Jockey was sold. We also continued to move forward with global rollouts of product, packaging, retail, websites, and marketing in a very entrepreneurial way. However, now I shifted my focus to putting a more sustainable support structure in place. For example, I:-- Established the first official orientation program to educate 200+ international personnel on the company, brand, and division practices.-- Ensured that our brand guidelines related to retail, iconography, logo use, and website templates were properly documented and maintained (as well as all of our processes).-- Supervised and developed two direct reports so that they could easily step-in and step-up (and they did!)During this time, I also enjoyed the opportunity to manage agencies and a global team in developing five global product marketing campaigns. I lead brainstorming sessions, developed creative briefs, wrote copy, attended photo shoots… Fun stuff!

I was at the center of a small team that rebuilt relationships and developed the support structure to service 19 international licensees and two overseas offices with new branding initiatives. We defined, developed, and rolled out products, packaging, retail, websites, and marketing that were adopted globally – which was completely new for the division. It was a very entrepreneurial environment, which I found that I loved. I also loved building credibility and trust with people all over the word.It’s always a struggle for me to say what “I” did because I was always so focused on the “we.” Plus, I really did do a little bit of everything! Here are a few examples of what “I” did, though: traveled all of the world to make presentations and collaborate on projects, learned about retail design and visual merchandising, managed the Extranet and FTP site that served as our communication hub, hired a direct report to help with our growing responsibilities, and advised our international partners on graphic design and legal matters for their marketing materials.

“Product execution” is a fancy name for what essentially was a product development and sourcing role. Building upon my previous Operations experience, I executed product and packaging development with overseas contractors (mainly in Asia), including price negotiations and development of action plans for on-time product launches. It was pretty cool to walk in a store and see underwear that I had managed from set of patterns to a real product for sale!

Reporting to the company’s SVP of Manufacturing & Operations, I had the unique opportunity to receive training in management issues and manufacturing processes from him and other senior leaders. I spent time in the manufacturing facilities and distribution center to learn about different facets of the supply chain. I also handled production planning for sourced men’s and kids’ underwear. These experiences gave me a great operational grounding and appreciation for what it takes to get a product made.
