About Cheryl Weston

Experienced Mechanical Engineer, with extensive knowledge in product improvement, product inspection, manufacturing processes, product design and development, molding and mold design. Background in consumer, medical, and life improvement products and skilled in various computer programs.I have always been fascinated by what was around me and at an early age became involved in figuring out how things worked. This curiosity stayed with me and expanded as I grew up, so what better profession to go into than one of the STEM professions? I enjoy being challenged to develop products (design, prototyping, testing), inspect, and successfully manufacture these products.Extensive experience with many CAD programs: SolidWorks, UniGraphics, ProE, AutoCAD, CADKey (3D)Analysis experience with: B-D DFMA, FMEA, MoldFlow, MiniTab, Green Belt Six Sigma, CalendarCADContact me at cherylweston5@gmail.com or through LinkedIn.

  • P&G
Sr. Mechanical Engineer ~ Product Design And Development
    P&G Dec 2002 - Jul 2010
    Cincinnati, Ohio, Us
My greatest accomplishment was developing the ProGlide 'Snowplow' elastomer fin design which surpassed the shave comfort of previously manufactured razors. With the aid of the Industrial Design Department, we came up with a design which allowed for a close and comfortable shave. Utilizing an approved elastomer, it passed the required chemical and mechanical testing.
  • Optelec
Sr. Mechanical Engineer ~ Manufacturing Improvements | Customer And Vendor Issues | Quality Control
    Optelec 1998 - Oct 2000
    Us
Since it manufactures table top, low vision systems for people losing their eyesight, I consider Optelec to be a life improvement company. It was not unheard of to receive systems for servicing which had glue or paint on them by people using the magnification to tie fishing lures or paint models. One customer complaint I solved had to do with accidental activation of the system buttons when customers rested their wrists on the front of the movable table rather than the rests. It was imperative that we addressed this issue since the buttons controlled focus, magnification, and brightness of the screen. Option 1 involved creating a lip around the buttons to prevent accidental activation and would be done when the table molds had to be replaced. Option 2 was a short term, inexpensive, and easy fix which would be sent out with new systems and sent to existing customers. After a few design and material iterations, the final design was an injection molded piece to place over the buttons to protect them from activation. This task was completed on time and under budget.Responsibilities: address quality and customer issues; develop/prototype/test system improvements; document changes and protocols; and improve manufacturing of table top low vision systems.

  • Milliporesigma
Mechanical Engineer ~ Product Development | Mold Design With Process Development
    Milliporesigma Aug 1988 - Jan 1994
    Burlington, Ma, Us
I started off at Millipore in the Product Design Department where I created products, assembly and test fixtures, worked on processes, and created my first injection mold which led to many more including figuring out how to machine the mold and creating drawings for all parts of the mold: bases, inserts, knockout pins, electrodes, sprues. One project which I enjoyed during my time in this department was to greatly decrease the Millipack filter rejects. I started by opening rejected and good parts to understand the reject cause and to narrow the focus of the investigation. Next step was to start at the beginning of the assembly process utilizing housing parts, filters, heat sealer, ultrasonic welder, and fixtures to recreate rejects. After assembling and cutting open many parts, I discovered that the diffuser in the housings were dislodging during the ultrasonic welding and breaking through the filter. This problem was corrected and rejects were eliminated.Next stop was the Plastics Engineering Department to further my knowledge of injection molding, a project which taught me all aspects of injection molding was the SuperFlow Disk. The SuperFlow disk was to increase the amount and speed of fluid filtered in a standard size Milipak container which meant that the filters would be supported in the housing differently than they had in the past. I had to design a filter support which would achieve this goal. The mesh of the support was so small that wire EDM was too large. What to do ... I came up with the idea of utilizing high speed jewelers saws to cut the mesh design into the mold inserts, the saws were first machined with the desired shape of the mesh then used to cut the shape into the inserts. Plunge EDM carbides were used to create an internal runner system which would aid in plastic material flow during molding yet not hinder fluid flow during use. After working on the injection molding process, we were successful in molding full mesh parts for testing.
