As Manager of Software Engineering, lead the development of all software and a variety of cross-functional projects for Agfa’s laser imaging product lines. This activity encompassed development of new products and full life cycle management of maturing products. Core member of system design team. As Manager of Central Engineering, managed IT infrastructure and applications, regulatory compliance, reliability, mechanical and electrical CAD, machine shop, product documentation, and release control.• Managed the design and implementation of an award-winning PDM (Product Document Management) system, including an Extranet for supplier access and interaction. • Created and maintained a corporate Intranet, including applications for Safety and Vocational Training, Time Reporting, Project Estimation, Configuration Management, Corrective and Preventative Action tracking, Document Management, Group Collaboration, and other administrative functions. This effort very nearly achieved the ideal of a “paperless office,” substantially reducing operating costs and improving organizational efficiency.• Championed a radically different approach for embedded system architecture and modular system development. Through use of off-the-shelf components, open system software, and Agile Methods, achieved a comprehensive prototype of a machine control system in just 2 months (vs. typical 12-16 mos.).• Conceived and managed development of a web-based (Ajax), object-oriented, data-centric software architecture for machine control, creating an “intelligent” machine with self-diagnostic and remote (Internet) servicing capabilities.• Working with the engineering management team, defined and implemented a complete phase-gate lifecycle management system. Achieved ISO 9001 certification.• Acting Director of Engineering for the CAPS (Computer Automated Publishing System) business unit, ultimately acquired by XEROX. Designed an SGML document/data management system.
Xerox acquired the CAPS business unit from Agfa, and I was employed by Xerox to facilitate the transfer. Working from Cambridge, Ma, I worked with Xerox personnel in San Diego to transfer systems, technical knowledge and customer information. Collaborated with PARC personnel to overcome technical issues and resume development of the SGML document/data management system. Upon completion of this work, I returned to Agfa. (Today, this product continues under a Xerox spinoff known as Astoria Software).
Managed software engineering for Gerber’s photoplotting, x-y cutting, and optical inspection systems. As project manager, lead a team of electrical, mechanical, software, and optical engineers to develop the model 3244 photoplotting system, Gerber’s most successful product in the PCB imaging market. As Program Manager, managed all active projects through all phases of the product lifecycle, coordinating activities throughout the organization while reporting progress and issues to senior management.
