As an educator and activist, Chet organized the youth group MYA (Malton Youth Alliance) in the 1980’s to advocate for the adoption of a human rights policy by the Peel Board of Education. Working with anti-racist educator Enid Lee he developed decolonizing curriculum and community initiatives at the North York Board of Education. He was York University’s first full time Race and Ethnic Relations Advisor; along with Ruth King the Status of Women Advisor formed the March 8/March 21 Coalition to develop intersectional human rights polices and inclusive curricular frameworks. The human rights policy framework he developed for Sir Sandford Fleming College was used as a template by the Ontario government in 1993 to develop the Harassment and Discrimination Policy Framework for Ontario colleges and universities. He developed and implemented Centennial College’s human rights policy as a collaborative organizational change process involving curricular change with the unions, student’s association and management. Chet was also the architect of the curriculum framework adopted as the template for the college’s Signature Learning Experience. His contributions to decolonizing and critical education have been acknowledged with Canadian and North American awards for educational leadership. Based on his work as a community activist and dub poet, Chet was appointed to the Board of the Ontario Arts council by Ontario premier Bob Rae in 1993. As a pioneer of the Dub Poetry genre in Canada, Chet served as an artistic director of Canada’s Dub Poets Collective helping to organize a number of international festivals and conferences. He has released 6 albums some of which have charted on Canada’s indie music charts for global music; a couple of his recordings were included in the sound track of the documentary, Capitalism is the Crisis.
