InternshipAshok Leyland Jan 2013 - Jun 2013Chennai Area, IndiaModern vehicle development requires Noise, Vibration, and Harshness (NVH) refinement to obtain the proper level of customer satisfaction and acceptance. Hence following analysis were carried out on BS-III, BS-IV exhaust system to study its NVH characteristics.• Computational and Experimental Modal AnalysisA 3D CAD model was imported in Hypermesh for building FE Model of exhaust system. The middle surfaces were extracted from the geometry. The surfaces were meshed using shell elements. The welds and bolted connections were simulated using rigid and Beam elements respectively. The created FE model was submitted to solver (MSC Nastran) for obtaining solutions (Modal frequencies and mode shapes). Pre-Test was performed on the virtual FE model using LMS Virtual Lab to specify the best and optimum no. of accelerometer and driving point excitation locations for experimental modal testing. The modal frequencies and mode shapes obtained experimentally were verified. Thus critical modes of exhaust system, nodal and anti-nodal points were identified.• Experimental Transmission and Insertion Loss Measurement Transmission Loss (TL) was experimentally calculated at regular frequency intervals covering a frequency range of about 2000 Hz using impedance tube. Than TL of BS-III, BS-IV exhaust system were compared. Any muffler is qualified by the amount of Insertion Loss (IL) that takes place within the muffler. Hence IL at vehicle level was measured and compared using SLM. An interaction matrix was set to give one to one relation between Modal Characteristics to durability and Transmission loss & Insertion Loss to noise performance.Tools used: Hypermesh, Nastran, LMS Virtual Lab, LMS Test Lab for data acquisition system. -
