Covered cops, crimes, courts and other issues related to public safety in the Colorado Springs area, which extends to El Paso, Teller and Fremont counties. I worked with editors, fellow writers and the multimedia department to produce the most comprehensive coverage in our area. I also transitioned to sports, politics, digital media and edited our weeklies.

Phnom Penh, Cambodia

• As a general assignment reporter for the English-language newspaper, wrote, developed and researched stories about one of the fastest growing world capitals, Phnom Penh, and its surrounding areas
• Applied native Khmer language skills to build trust and solidarity with the local staff and sources
• Worked closely with editor-in-chief on breaking news stories, features and columns, while lending assistance with copy editing on deadline nights

Balakan, Azerbaijan

• Taught English with local teachers at a small village school near the Georgian border with an enrollment of about 250 students
• Organized summer camps, English conversation and creative writing clubs, an Ultimate Frisbee club and summer office hours
• Completed an English resource room through USAID funding with a small library
• Supervised the Peace Corps World Map Project
• Lived with a host family and within a culture outside of my very own, speaking a foreign language and working closely with community members
• Co-edited the official Peace Corps Azerbaijan publication called The AZLander and assisted with Write On! Azerbaijan, part of an international writing competition

San Luis Obispo, California

• In charge of the prep sports coverage in California's Central Coast, overseeing a dozen high schools by writing game stories and features
• Updated a blog on a weekly basis, covering additional aspects of high school sports that didn't make it in the print edition
• Worked on the copy desk at least once a week, designing pages and proofreading local and national content
• Wrote breaking news articles for the main section, occasionally filled in for the college sports beat, manned the sports phone lines during game nights and contributed to weekly budget meetings

Turlock, California

After starting in education department, transitioned into sports to maintain entire section while covering five high schools and one four-year college on top of various recreational activities. Other responsibilities included photographing, designing pages, working on videos and maintaining work accounts on Twitter and Facebook.

Salt Lake City, Utah

Covered college football, basketball and women’s gymnastics teams and assisted with sidebars for the Utah Jazz while primarily reporting on nearly 100 high schools as part of a 15-person staff of sports writers. Also, worked in weekly breaking news shifts, wrote enterprisers and participated in such multimedia assignments as podcasts and blogs.

Yakima, Washington Area

Wrote profiles and lifestyle features and covered social, health and city news and issues during a summer internship through the Chips Quinn Scholars Program.
