In 1923 in the great City of Newark, the Chi Sigma Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. was chartered as an Alumni Chapter. Chi Sigma continued to thrive throughout the 1920’s and 1930’s and although the exact date is unclear it seems that chapter became inactive around the 1950’s.On October 21st, 1957 the Chi Sigma Chapter was voted for re-chartering and the reactivation members were Bros. Nathanial A. Brown, David H. Hall, Homer L. Meade, John H. Rice, and Alonzo C. Jackson. The chapter experienced some highs and some lows during this time, but sadly with brothers moving out of state and transitioning to the Omega Chapter, the Chi Sigma Chapter again became inactive in 1963.Skeptical that sigmadom would work in NJ re-chartering was discussed and voted for in 1973. The 1973 re-activation Charter Members were: Bro. Paul A. Cash, Bro. William Howard, Bro. Alonzo C. Jackson, CPA, Bro. Jerry Edwards, and Bro. John H. Rice. Shortly afterwards, Bro. Charles E. Knight became an active member in the chapter. These brothers worked long and hard to bring Sigma back to NJ and Chi Sigma has been an active and dynamic chapter since.Key Historic Milestones• November 1974- Chi Sigma has held it’s first dance with 125 attendees. With the success of the event it was decided to make this an annual event.• July 15, 1978 – The first undergraduate chapter in Northern NJ was formed at the College of Montclair State (Kappa Epsilon). From this chapter other undergraduate chapters were formed that served as feeder chapters to the graduate chapter.• 1994- Chi Sigma received it’s non-profit Certification of Incorporation to better service the community, better known as (SCEI)• Some 40 years after the initial “Chi Sigma Dance” Chi Sigma has given out $100,000.00 in scholarships to college bound graduating High School Students in NJ.
