A CASA volunteer is a Court Appointed Special Advocate, referred to as Guardian Ad Litem (GAL) in some states, who is appointed by a judge to serve as the ongoing link, the “advocate,” for an abused or neglected child during their time in the court system. Any adult who is willing to stand up for abused and neglected children can take the initial steps to become a CASA volunteer. After you receive the following training, you are qualified to be appointed by a judge: • Thorough training from professionals with direct experience in the court and child welfare systems • Training in child development • Interviewing techniques • Cultural competency Once you are assigned to a child’s court case, that’s when your hands-on experience happens as a CASA or GAL volunteer. You will then be provided with the resources and support necessary to develop an objective viewpoint of the child’s welfare. You will:• Research background information • Gather new data • Develop a written or verbal recommendation report that is shared in court Your report becomes one of several important factors a judge considers when making a ruling on behalf of a child.
