At THK, a leading manufacturer of automotive and industrial parts, I helped to harmonizing the culture and communications between our Ohio facility and our Japan headquarters. I partnered with the US and Japan executives in order to drive change and champion new initiatives that allowed the operations in Ohio and Japan headquarters to work together more collaboratively and cohesively.I led a dedicated team and the largest language and communications department at THK globally, I oversaw the delivery of Japanese to English and English to Japanese translation and interpretation services, transition services for Japanese staff on assignment in the US, events and outreach programming, and communications, which include social media, content creation, and technical writing.Considered the maternal figure in my department, I’ve chartered professional development paths for my staff. I have an immense sense of pride when I see them grow and evolve within their careers.In addition to this, a few of my key core contributions include:● Advocated for the creation of several new roles, including Corporate Translator & Terminologist, Japanese Instructor, Content Writer & Communications Program Specialist, and Lead and Supervisor for Bilingual Communications Support. ● Envisioned the translation process and trained our Corporate Translator to project manage all translation requests from US operations and Japan headquarters● Strategized and oversaw the educational outreach programs, summer camp, and open house, “THK Day,” all of which engage students and educate them on careers in the manufacturing industry with topics including engineering, robotics, and Japanese culture

As the Japanese Relations Administrator, I facilitated communication and relationship-building between Japanese and American executive leaders. I partnered with the President, functioning as his right hand and as his interpreter. I was also the interpreter for THK’s CEO during his visits to Ohio.With a focus on delivering Japanese language and culture insights along with translation project management and services, and influencing change to foster greater connection between Japan headquarters and the Ohio facility, a few of my achievements that I’m proud to showcase have included:● Implemented computer-assisted translation tools to streamline internal translation requests as well as the translation of external and corporate communications from Japanese to English and English to Japanese● Initiated and developed the first iteration of THK’s Educational Outreach program for Japanese language students welcoming students from various local high schools and colleges ● Conceived a specialized training program for high-potential talent, which became part of an ongoing program in collaboration with Japan headquarters

In this role, I was a “boots on the ground” contact who ensured a seamless transition to life in America for Japanese employees on assignment in Ohio, as well as for their families. I continue to offer transition support and have worked with approximately 50 families over the course of my career at THK, assisting them with everything from arranging housing and utilities to booking and even attending medical appointments and serving as an interpreter. Whatever the families’ needs, I would fulfill them. In turn, this work left me fulfilled, as I saw the impact my work had on improving the quality of life for the families.

Continuing my work in US-Japan relations, I joined the USA Girl Scouts Overseas - West Pacific as Administrative Assistant, supporting daughters of military, Foreign Service, and American expat families as well as girls in international schools in Japan and Korea under USA Girl Scouts Overseas West Pacific. While my title was Administrative Assistant, my work was really that of an Outreach and Community Coordinator. Leveraging my bilingualism, I facilitated connections between the USA Girl Scouts West Pacific and the Japanese Girl Scouts, and I was a core contributor to the annual conference and summer camp and exchange between the two groups. I also acted as an interpreter for several events, including executive conferences.

Before I stepped into the role of Outreach Assistant, it had historically been an opportunity available only for graduate students. But given my experience in US-Japan relations, the sponsor thought I would be perfect for this role, and I was the first undergraduate student to hold the position.As Outreach Assistant, I oversaw the planning and execution of the North Central High School exchange program with its sister school in Iwate Prefecture, Japan. I prepared the participating students with lessons on culture and customs. I also traveled with the students to Japan and ensured they were well-accommodated. It was incredibly rewarding to witness the students’ experiences while in Japan, and the enriching, lifelong connections they made with the country, culture, and people.

Since a young age, it was my dream to become a Japanese teacher in the US public school system. Deeply passionate about the Japanese language and culture, I wanted to share this with Americans. As an educator, I taught Japanese language and culture to children from kindergarten to senior high school.
