Research assistant to Dr. Emily Hannum in quantitative sociology. We worked on an economic/development survey conducted throughout western China to understand the relationships between language of instruction in ethnic minority communities at the primary and secondary education levels, and community factors such as parental education, ethnic composition, political party affiliation, and socioeconomic status as it relates to tertiary education attainment. Using descriptive and regression techniques, preliminary results show that while the Chinese government encourages minority language education at the primary and secondary levels, certain factors are correlated with a prevalence of Mandarin-language education, which is in turn correlated with tertiary education enrollment and achievement. Such factors are, inter alia, parental education levels and high SES, as all universities in China have instruction in Mandarin, and fluency is required for student success.
