You know.. I wasn't always a software engineer. I was on the path to becoming a professional violinist, having finished most of my units at UCLA and getting ready to prepare for my senior recital. A nerve injury put that all to a halt. Through a stroke of luck and a sprinkle of fate, my roommate mentioned his co-worker had made the shift into software through a bootcamp. Since I had to take time off to recover, I figured I might as well give this "bootcamp" a shot. Who knew it would reinvigorate the childhood dream I had forgotten about: to be an engineer and create the first, real, working Gundam. Even though software wasn't going to let me create a giant anime robot on my own, I quickly realized my true joy was in creating things.Fast forward to today, and I've worked at both a large company (IBM) and multiple, fast-paced startups (Zorroa and Aspiration). Most recently at Zorroa, we rallied to create, from the ground up, a comprehensive, no-code workflow ML/AI platform. Working with my teammates, we created a codebase that defined frontend best practices, created flexible, accessible, reusable components, and established patterns for easily readable code. Despite the complex features such an application demands, our efforts have helped us continue to efficiently deliver new features, even under the pickle jar lid that is the tight deadlines of a rapidly growing startup. The injury I thought was a setback instead became the turning point that led me to rediscover my oldest passion. Now I get to work in the industry that creates the websites I frequent and the games I love.
