I create stories for clients, artists and friends. Ok, so what is a story, and why are stories so valuable? Here's a story.I once wrote a joke for Stephen Hawking. A colleague of mine worked with the legendary physicist. He told me that when speaking in public, (via a computer) Hawking was dismayed that the process of getting him on-stage and hooking him up to his computer was awkward and anti-climatic to his introduction and the subsequent applause. As a stand-up comic for 40 years, I understood. So when I had the opportunity of a lifetime to meet Stephen, I offered a suggestion. To my delight, Stephen chortled in his unique way. So at his next public appearance, Hawking, struggling with the debilitating effects of ALS, was wheeled out on the stage, hooked up to the computer, all while the hushed auditorium waited for him to speak. He turned on the computer with a stick mounted to his head and said, "You should have seen the other guy." The crowd roared.I've earned (7) Edward R. Murrow awards including the National Award for writing, as well as over 30 AP honors and awards for writing and directing. I've hosted talk radio for 27 years, from DC to San Francisco. I have dozens of appearances on national TV performing stand-up and opining on culture and politics, as well as writing for The Tonight Show, Steve Allen, and HBO. Today I write, produce & broadcast via radio and podcasts while my videos on Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, IG and TikTok have more than 250 million views. There is plenty of research to suggest that stories are not only how we remember and organize events in our brain, but also a factor in empathy; our ability to connect with other humans. Paul J. Zak is the founding director of the Center for Neuroeconomics Studies and his lab discovered that a neurochemical called oxytocin triggers the brain to allow us to feel safe when approaching others. Oxytocin is produced when we are trusted. Stories build credibility, empathy and trust. For example, when someone visits an attorney or financial website, they aren’t looking for a video of metrosexuals walking in slow motion. They want to know two things; will you win and can I trust you? Trust is earned, but that’s just a start. Your knowledge and your empathy matter to clients.
