I'm a journalist interested in finding new ways to inform and start conversations with readers.I began my career at The Associated Press in New York, where I covered the financial markets and economy, before becoming one of the first hires on LinkedIn's ever-evolving editorial team. I'm now covering work and management issues at The Wall Street Journal.I welcome any tips or story ideas: I'm chip.cutter@wsj.com.

ReporterThe Wall Street Journal Sep 2018 - PresentNew York, Ny, UsI write about work, and how it's changing, for the Journal. -
Managing EditorLinkedin Nov 2011 - Sep 2018Sunnyvale, Ca, UsI was the first journalist hired by LinkedIn's editor-in-chief in 2011, and in nearly seven years at the company, I took on a range of projects.Favorites included helping to launch the Influencer program – an effort to recruit big-name contributors (from JPMorgan's Jamie Dimon to Cinnabon's Kat Cole) to write on LinkedIn – and opening up the publishing platform to all English-speaking users.I also led the editorial team's efforts to create original, data-backed lists — LinkedIn's version of magazine rankings. Within a year, these became some of the most-viewed, most-shared features in LinkedIn's history. Our list franchises now include Top Companies (where people want to work now) and Top Voices (spotlighting the top writers and emerging voices), among others.I then tackled another project, reporting across the U.S. on labor issues for a series of stories called "Work in Progress," on the current realities of work. (My reporting won a SABEW Best in Business Award in 2018.) Those stories brought me to grocery stores, pottery factories, gas stations, office parks, truck stops and an Amazon fulfillment center, where I wrote about everything from the future of cashiers — one of the largest job categories in America — to the opioid crisis. I broke news about an experiment from Walmart to deploy self-driving robotic floor cleaners overnight in stores, a plan that worried some workers but also showed the continued creep of automation in workplaces. l also collaborated with the talented producers of CBS This Morning, traveling with them on assignment to help tell these stories for broadcast. -
Business News ReporterAssociated Press Aug 2009 - Nov 2011New York, Ny, UsI wrote AP's flagship story on Wall Street and the financial markets and handled breaking news on tight deadlines. For the AP's award-winning "Meltdown Legacy" series, I wrote about the recession's generation gap. I also covered corporate earnings, IPOs, M&A activity and the mutual fund industry, and developed enterprise stories for AP’s Money & Markets product, combining text, data and graphics. -
Business Reporting InternAssociated Press May 2009 - Aug 2009New York, Ny, UsAs part of a 12-week internship, I covered investing, personal finance and corporate news. Highlights included breaking news about a plan by the nation’s auto suppliers to request federal loan guarantees. I also wrote feature stories for AP’s “New Frugality” series about changing consumer habits, writing about do-it-yourself car repairs gone wrong. I was hired into a full-time reporting position after the internship ended. -
Business Reporting InternIndianapolis Business Journal May 2008 - Aug 2008Indianapolis, In, UsI spent a summer covering business in Indianapolis. That meant lots of stories on local companies, plus dives into redevelopment controversies, lawsuits, bankruptcies, real-estate deals, and much more. Most memorable piece: I spent a day trailing a port-a-potty driver for a series on unusual jobs. (I still wince when thinking back to what he described as his nightmare clean-up scenario: finding a toilet overturned.) After the internship ended, I began writing a weekly column covering local real estate issues as a freelancer.
