Technical Marketing ManagerJune 2005 - June 2007After moving back to the Boston, Massachusetts area to be closer to family, I worked remotely in a role focused on Technical Marketing. I focused on Education and Training, worked on the team that selected, developed and deployed the "MiTek University" on-line training facility. To this day, I continue to help guide that effort. I developed and delivered high-level presentations to prospective and existing customers focusing all the many facets of the MiTek software suite. I worked on strategic planning for MiTek's technical related offerings and services which ultimately resulted in the business plan for Component Runner, LLC.

As a member of the MiTek USA executive team, I was responsible for MiTek's marketing vision and execution, website guidance, design and manufacturing software marketing and deployment, software product management, education and training, aiding the Sales team in obtaining new business. I was on the team that designed and implemented the paperless workflow system used today to process and seal millions of truss engineering drawings annually. I was on the team that promoted the overall business to potential buyers and presented MiTek software to Moody's and Standard and Poor's on wall street which ultimately led to the purchase of MiTek to Warren Buffett's - Berkshire Hathaway.

As the MiTek software moved into the production arena with programs like MiTek's MBA and MiTek's MVP, the need to focus our marketing efforts on the benefits of these applications became a full time position and with my background and experience coupled with my passion for creating powerful presentation materials, I moved into this role. I also led the Regional Technical Support team and worked with Regional Technical Support Rep's to continue to develop their understanding and skills in the ever-changing world of MiTek software.

With MiTek's decision to develop software globally my role was to be a conduit to unite the technical support departments around the world. During this exciting time at MiTek, I had the privilege of meeting and getting to know some of the most talented software support specialists in the world of MiTek. I also was given the great opportunity to visit truss plants in all corners of the world which gave me a great perspective on the needs of our industry as a global entity vs a local one. I was part of the MiTek Holding's Executive team and attended all Senior Management meetings where we set high level goals and priorities. In 1999 during one of those meetings we made the collective decision to begin investing in the "Next Generation Whole House" software, which we all know today as MiTek SAPPHIRE Structure.

In this role, I lead the effort regarding all customer technical support. I grew the team to over 30 people during this time and was instrumental in developing the process for demonstrations, installations and support. With new customers coming to MiTek due to the software, our need to add new people and train them was a constant. We added training centers at most of our stamping plants around the country and developed 4 day training classes that ran each week. I worked as a liaison between our customers and developers to help translate the real-world needs of the industry into computer code via highly detailed software requirements, designing the UI and the functionality for many new enhancements in the MiTek 2000 software suite.

With MiTek on the cusp of releasing the Industry's first native Microsoft Windows application, MiTek 2000 there was tremendous opportunity to radically improve the useability and functionality of the truss modeling and design process due to the graphical nature of Microsoft Windows. In my role as USA Software Product Manager, I focused on customer requests as well as quality assurance. I worked on software specifications and managed the customer Beta sites. It was an exciting time at MiTek with lots of new customers being added as well as connector plate company acquisitions and the software they developed being added to our area of responsibility every few months.

Greater Boston Area

During this period of my career in the SBC Industry, Gang-Nail Systems, Inc. was purchased by MiTek Industries, Inc. At that point in time, MiTek owned Panel Clip and Hydro Air Engineering. My role included my previous responsibilities as a technical rep as well as all sales related activities for connector plates and machinery. Blending the culture of Gang-Nail Systems, Inc. and Hydro Air Engineering was an interesting experience as both company's had tremendous name recognition which ultimately required the elimination of those names and we became a single entity, MiTek. It was a basic move which created tremendous momentum which lead to future growth.

I worked in the New England area as the company's (and the SBC industry's) first dedicated regional technical representative whose sole purpose was to serve customers in the area of their computer and software needs. Working alongside the regions Sales Manager, I helped develop the role which quickly become a sought after benefit for the Gang Nail Fabricator. In less than a year, the company created a regional technical support team that supported 5 regions making up the USA. In 1987 I developed and delivered the company's first Technical Support Symposium, an intense 5 day training session designed to keep the technical support team aware and in-tune with the company's software advancements. This annual symposium has been conducted every year since and remains as a major piece in the training of the MiTek Tech Reps'.

After relocating to Washington state, I was hired to be the production scheduler and dispatcher part time and computer programmer part time. While I learned the production scheduling and dispatch role, I was developing an application on a Tandy Radio Shack Model 1 computer to do the same thing. This effort resulted in a totally computer based scheduling system sitting on a custom database that gave the shop and the office up to date information regarding job status. I developed an application called "HipCut" that was used to calculate California Hip chords and jacks for dual pitch hip ends. This application was designed to work with the Metra-Cut saw and gave the saw operator accurate pivot and pin settings to make their job much more efficient. This application was used daily for over 12 years. I managed the design team and was instrumental in moving the company to the computer age by developing and implementing software applications for pricing, cutting and scheduling. I was instrumental in helping move Tilton Truss Manufacturing, Inc. from a primarily residential truss manufacturer to a commercial truss manufacturer. I also worked in commercial sales capacity during the downturn in the early 80's.

My role was to design floor and roof truss layouts and engineering for commercial truss construction in the California market. Working under the Direct Supervision of a Professional Engineer, I learned the truss design process using Gang-Nail Systems Autotruss system. In 1977 Gang-Nail offered this software as a time-sharing system and we used it via a 300 baud modem connected to Gang-Nail's mainframe computer. We typed the input to run a single truss on a teletype machine and had to give it 30 minutes to process. The input data was extremely rigid in format and one character off would result in a failure known as a "core dump" and we would have to wait 20 minutes while 12' of gibberish printed on expensive thermal printer paper, over a long distance phone call. I learned early in my career that meticulous accuracy is mandatory in the truss design arena. The process yielded lumber sizes, grade and species for the members and member forces. We had to then draw the truss by hand and draw 2" scale joint details that we would then "plate" with a Mylar plating template that would have little x's for the teeth. We had to balance each joint's forces and considering ineffective plating area, determine the correct size to use. Once we sized the plate we would do our best to locate the plate in a production friendly manner. It took about 2 hours to design, run, draw and plate one truss design. If we designed 12 trusses a day, we were smoking hot! I was fortunate to learn the truss design process at this location, as I've obtained an in-depth understanding of the truss design process.
