Researcher In Residence
For 12 years I worked as an Intel Researcher In Residence with the CRANN/AMBER nanotechnology centre. This involved delivering hands-on research projects in a variety of fields (magnetism, carbon, novel 2D semiconductors) in collaboration with leading principal investigators for our corporate customers in Intel Components Research. I contributed to several EU FP7 projects and had the opportunity to work with brilliant academic and industrial researchers across Europe. In parallel I managed the Intel Ireland side of the Irish Research Council's Enterprise Partnership Scheme PhD sponsorship program. This involved working with research groups all over Ireland to identify candidate projects and students we could co-sponsor. Ultimately I managed to hire many students into the company. As a result of this I also carried out a review of our historical and future hiring strategies which involved working closely with the HR department to analyse ten years of hiring data. Another important aspect of my job was education and outreach. I gave countless talks to undergraduate students and mentored some through the Wild Geese program in TCD. I organised the Intel Ireland Research Conference for several years, which brought graduate, academic and industrial researchers together to identify new areas of collaborative opportunity. I presented and ultimately organised the Intel Ireland stand at the BT Young Scientist Exhibition. I completed training courses in communication and presentation with a BBC science producer as part of the British Council's Famelab competition. Most recently I was asked to act as a judge. Research Specialties: Industrial semiconductor processing and technology, sputtering, ebeam evaporation, liftoff, probe station, CVD, wet etch, plasma etch, argon ion etch, UV lithography, EBL, SEM, UV mask design, UV mask fabrication, white light interferometry, variable angle spectroscopic ellipsometry, contact angle measurement, AFM, profilometry.
Senior Process Engineer
Process development role in Oregon for 2 years followed by copy-exactly technology transfer to Fab24 in Leixlip. Owned several tools during startup, from qualification to sustaining with flawless execution and record breaking yields.
Wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiter/ Scientific Assistant
This was a research role in the area of low k dielectric materials. I worked with colleagues in the Microtechnology Centre of the Technical University of Chemnitz to deposit, characterise and integrate low-k silicon dioxide xerogel films into a CMOS process. I achieved excellent results in lowering the dielectric constant by increasing film porosity but demonstrated a corresponding degradation in Young's modulus of the film. My work has been cited many times since.
Business English Language Teacher
I spent one year teaching business English to a variety of customers around Leipzig, including undertakers, miners, solicitors and factory managers, Objectives included giving factory tours and conducting business presentations. In my spare time I picked up the German language.
Radio Presenter
On air presenter at the startup Cork Campus Radio. Conducted interviews with the likes of David Gray, the Corrs etc, including editing, research and production. Co-hosted the science show, and hosted various music and breakfast shows. Lots of fun.
Research Assistant
Magnetic thin film deposition and characterisation. Applications included planar magentic inductors and power converters.
Research Assistant
3 month internship with Sony's Applied Magnetic Research division, working on low coercivity magnetic recording heads
Stagaire
6 month summer project in the Magnetism and Magnetic Materials Research Division, working on low coercivity alloys for high density magnetic recording heads
