As a researcher in the Maggi Kelly remote sensing lab, I focused on the application of satellite imagery and drone technology in water resource management. Specially, I used drones to research filamentous algae and aquatic plants in the Klamath River (pre dam removal) and I used satellite imagery to investigate potentially toxic cyanobacteria blooms in lakes and reservoirs throughout California.

Guayaquil, Ecuador

In my independent Fulbright research project, I am analyzing seasonal trends and contributing factors of algal blooms (using chlorophyll-a as a proxy for phytoplankton biomass) from 2003 to 2016 within the Marine Reserve surrounding the Galapagos Islands. This analysis involves the use of geospatial software such as TerrSet, ArcGIS, and QGIS to process Aqua MODIS chlorophyll-a, sea surface temperature, and photosynthetically-available radiation products. As part of this project, I hosted an Oceans and Water Resources Remote Sensing workshop at the Charles Darwin Foundation on Santa Cruz island in the Galapagos, and presented preliminary results from my study to members of the Research Station and Galapagos National Park. Additionally, I am collaborating with Dr. Mercy Borbor and colleagues from the Escuela Superior Politecnica del Litoral (ESPOL) institution in Guayaquil on an epidemiological risk assessment study. This project uses in-person surveys to understand risk perception of Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) within groups of local fishermen, restaurant owners, and environmental health managers along the coast of Ecuador (Santa Elena and Playas).

In the Center Lead position with the DEVELOP National Program at the NASA Ames Research Center, I managed several environmental research projects that incorporate NASA Earth Observations satellite imagery to create real-world tools and solutions. My daily roles included coordinating the creation and submission of all project deliverables (technical paper, poster, presentation, video), and providing technical and scientific advisement to teams. Additionally, I conducted performance reviews with participants, hired participants for each term, led the coordination of project partner and end-user communication, facilitated meetings with scientists and collaborators, constructed project proposals, and managed the FY budget.

As the Assistant Center Lead for the DEVELOP National Program at the NASA Ames Research Center, I support the Center Lead with management of participants, coordination of conferences, writing and editing of project proposals, preparation of reports for the DEVELOP National Program Office, analysis of project successes, and communication among participants, science advisers, and members of the scientific community. In the role of Communications Fellow, I create and compile content for social media venues, support the Design Associate with the conception and design of print materials for the DEVELOP national program, collaborate with my colleagues to coordinate Virtual Poster Sessions, produce newsletters, and conduct outreach activities.

This project involves creating a Decision Support System for the U.S. Forest Service by acquiring, processing, and uploading climate, vegetation, and hydrological data to ArcGIS Viewer for Flex. Conducting Ecological Forecasting of the Sierra Nevadas will investigate how climate change may alter this ecosystem through 2100. Through the use of remote sensing data such as MODIS, VIIRS, and LANDSAT products, collaboration with the U.S. Forest Service, and in-situ data, this analysis will be used as a tool for forest and land managers to better prepare for resource conservation and use in the upcoming century.

San Francisco

Through collaboration with 28 SFUSD public, private, and charter schools, my work at SF Environment involves public outreach to local schools to reduce the drive-alone rate during morning and afternoon commutes. By encouraging sustainable modes of transportation such as walking, biking, and carpooling, San Francisco can become a healthier community with less congestion around schools, fewer cars on the road, and better air quality. My work also involves data analysis, as well as the development of 40 GIS maps for schools.

During the Fall 2013 and Spring 2014 semesters, I have edited and graded students' work from UC Berkeley's Geography 183 and 187 classes, both of which are taught by Darin Jensen. I have become adept in Adobe Illustrator and ArcGIS, and have further developed skills pertaining to cartographic treatment, publishing professional work, and collaborating with others in a mentor-student relationship.

Throughout this City-student partnership, I updated existing trail maps and created original park pamphlets for the City of Lafayette using ArcGIS and Adobe Illustrator software. These maps and pamphlets were published and printed in April of 2014, and provide hikers, visitors, and residents with a graphic display of all trails and highlighted parks in Lafayette. While collaborating with city officials, I developed skills in communication, organization, and working independently on several GIS projects simultaneously.

Collaborated with the Berkeley Unified School District to implement recycling and composting in schools, and designed recycling, mixed paper, composting, and landfill aluminum signs for the District

Office Of Sustainability, Uc Berkeley

Audited UC Berkeley buildings and recommended energy-saving practices to building occupants to achieve reduced energy consumption on campus. These efforts helped UC Berkeley reach its Greenhouse Emissions Goal two years early.

Worked with the Oakland community to install rain barrels in schools and homes, and produced a map of the location of all rain barrels sold in Oakland through January 2013
