Science, communication and art. Dentistry is the perfect blend of everything I enjoy; it combines a deep understanding of the human body with the opportunity to connect with and impact patients, all while engaging in a hands-on, precise craft that transforms both smiles and lives. I am a diligent and motivated first-year student currently studying the Bachelor of Dental Health Science at Griffith University. Shadowing experience at my local dentist provided me with invaluable insights into the profession, deepening my understanding of patient care and the skills required. It additionally fuelled my passion for the field, where the different specialities piqued my interest. My previous experience as a Cadet for St Johns Ambulance also provided an opportunity for me to develop a compassionate and patient-centered approach which I endeavor to continue after graduation. Currently, I also work as a tutor, guiding students to achieve their potential- a testament to my desire to help others.My previous experiences have led me to develop 3 key transferable skills integral to my future career path as a Dentist:➢ 𝐓𝐞𝐚𝐦𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤As a St John Cadet, I worked as part of a multidisciplinary team to deliver first aid across various events. This experience taught me the value of coordinating with others in high-pressure situations to achieve a shared goal- in this case, providing the appropriate medical care to patients. It honed my ability to work effectively and efficiently within a team. This skill that is essential in any collaborative environment, especially within the healthcare field in order to provide holistic patient care.➢ 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧As a leader of our school’s Volunteering Committee and a Prefect subcommittee leader, I developed my communication skills through organising events, leading meetings, and collaborating with peers and staff. These experiences required clear, effective communication and this improved my ability to articulate ideas and listen to the perspectives of others. It also enhanced my ability to resolve conflicts.➢ 𝐄𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐲Being a tutor has allowed me to develop empathy as the privilege of connecting with students personally enables me to understand and appreciate unique challenges each student faces. In response to this, I adapt my teaching style to their individual needs, personalising the lesson to their needs. This has enhanced my ability to listen, understand and respond effectively- skills that are crucial for building strong relationships and rapport with others in professional settings.
