Crown Court Clerk
As a court clerk I am very busy managing the administration within the court room. I keep an accurate log of what is going on during hearings, sign and create orders which are sometimes sent to further governing bodies such as the police, probation and cps. Other administrative roles include adding indictments to the system, taking pleas, verdicts, and executing bench warrants. My role is public facing alongside this where I put indictments to defendants, swear in juries and take verdicts. I have a lot of responsibility in this role because not only do I have to act as the clerk of the court, but I must also liaise with other court staff and stakeholders such as solicitors and barristers. I am somewhat in charge of the usher ensuring the relevant updates from barristers are relayed to the judge, I always ensure there is great communication with the usher to not only ensure the smooth running of the court but to also ensure there is a good relationship between us both. I must also keep a good relationship with other court teams such as listings, business and admin teams to ensure hearings are dealt with in the most efficient way possible and to ensure the smooth running of the overall court system. This usually includes completing a mark up detailing the relevant key points in a hearing such as any dates or orders that have been made. I have visited the cells in order to gain an understanding of how our custody defendants are processed before court appearances and what their day looks like from where they are housed, the vehicles they are transported in and the food they receive. This was extremely important and valuable as a court clerk in allowing me to understand some of the difficulties a non complicit defendant can bring to the whole cell block which subsequently effects court time. This has allowed me to work Better with the cell staff and be able to communicate to the relevant parties exactly why there are delays.
