Chloë George, MSc, DipFRCPathChloë George is the Head of Component Development & Research and the Principal Clinical Scientist for Transfusion Medicine at the Welsh Blood Service. For over 20 years, Chloë has been a leading transfusion scientist, providing guidance and advice on blood transfusion to colleagues in NHS Wales. She sits on national professional groups and international bodies to influence best practice in blood transfusion.As Head of the Component Development & Research Laboratory at the Welsh Blood Service, Chloë partners with clinical colleagues and academia on blood component research projects, as well as developing relationships with commercial enterprises to accelerate the adoption of healthcare innovations, novel technologies, and devices. Chloë’s background is in the manufacture of blood components and her main area of scientific interest is the development of novel methods for the production of blood components to improve outcomes for patients and increase efficiency of the blood supply chain. Her support and encouragement of other healthcare scientists are at the forefront: supervising colleagues’ academic projects, mentoring students, and directing research aims, allows colleagues to continue discovering and developing their passion for the profession. Chloe is a productive and respected leader who shares her expertise to inspire performance in colleagues. She provides technical knowledge to organisational processes to ensure Welsh Blood remains an evidence-based, scientific lead organisation.Chloë is currently undertaking a Doctorate in Clinical Science and has a special scientific interest in cold storage of platelets as a way of improving their haemostatic function and the logistics of platelet concentrate use. In 2022 Chloë was awarded Healthcare Scientist of the Year at Wales’s Advancing Healthcare Awards for her outstanding contribution to improving transfusion outcomes, minimising risk to patients, and refining treatments for people requiring transfusions.
