Sky

I have worked in an Agile environment for 6 months in the Data Engineering team. I worked closely with our American NBCUniversal/Peacock colleagues to deliver high quality data. Data quality was improved by using SQL to profile and structure the data into a useable format for data analysts and scientists. I also migrated data which will save NBCU around $20,000 a month by understanding and maintaining a data pipeline. The aim of my project within the Advanced Analytics team is to predict churn at a customer level. The model was retrained using XGBoost and had an AUC test score of 0.84. The model is ready to be productionized and customer churn predictions will be generated every week. In addition to machine learning, ad hoc requests were completed at a fast rate with the use of SQL querying and data visualization libraries like Matplotlib. This work enhanced Sky's business insights to why customer's churn at Sky, which will lead to better marketing campaigns. The aim of my first project within the Commercial Analytics team was to recreate 9 propensity models for 3 KPIs (turn around, churn, and contribution) when Stand Alone Broadband (SABB) customers were placed into 3 different treatment groups. The models that I created (with the use of XGBoost and Light Gradient Boosting Machine) had a 5% increase in performance compared to older models. To further improve the performance of the models, Uplift Modelling was used to optimize the KPIs of customers arriving at the end of their offer. For my second project within the Commercial Analytics team, I collaborate with the Strategy and Partnerships team to gain insight if Sky customers are devoted to a certain sport. Through in-depth discussions with stakeholders, we identify the business problems, and evaluate potential solutions. When working with large datasets and apply analytical techniques, this would help Sky decide whether it is worth to produce a new sports platform or not.

Doctoral Researcher

Glasgow, Scotland, United Kingdom

The aim of my PhD project was to investigate how stable proteins are with the use of fluorescence techniques. Protein aggregation plays a key role in neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease. Protein interactions were measured with the use of UV-Vis spectroscopy, Time-Resolved Emission Spectra, and Fluorescence Lifetime. Through statistical analysis and developing novel mathematical models, the insights of protein aggregation were extracted. Due to large datasets, Python was used to automate repeatable analysis such as extract key parameters and input them into a csv file, and visualising data. In addition, SQL was used to update and retrieve data from multiple datasets. By using Python and SQL to speed up data analysis increased my productivity by 100%. This allowed me to concentrate on the more creative aspects of my project. I successfully completed and defended my Doctoral Thesis, published 4 papers, and presented at conferences around the world.

Oct 2015 - Mar 2020

Doctoral Researcher

Teddington

To enhance my PhD research, I undertook a 6 month placement with the Biotechnology Group at NPL in London. The project assigned to me was "Investigating Biomolecules with Super Resolution Microscopy". The process for understanding protein fibrillogenesis is fundamentally important in order to underpin the onset of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease. In order to understand protein fibrillogenesis, simple models have to be synthesized and analysed. Using the sequence to structure relationships, I was able to synthesize a peptide model from the bottom up. Was able to image the peptide aggregation in real time with the use of Structured Illumination Microscopy (SIM) and provide images with less than 50 nm resolution using direct Stochastic Optical Reconstruction Microscopy (dSTORM). Through successful collaboration with NPL, this enabled me to publish a paper, a book chapter, and a chapter on my Doctoral Thesis. In addition, I was able to present my results in conferences in America, Europe, and around the UK.

Apr 2016 - Oct 2016

Summer Research Intern

Glasgow, United Kingdom

Completed my internship in The Photophysics Group at the University of Strathclyde. I fabricated BSA encapsulated gold nanoclusters (BSA-AuNCs) which have been extensively used as a fluorescent probe for biomedical applications in imaging, detection, and therapy due to their superior photostability and high compatibility. I optimized the synthesis of BSA-AuNCs by investigating the pH effects upon its size, shape, and fluorescent properties of gold nanoclusters. These properties were determined using spectroscopy techniques such as fluorescence anisotropy, UV Vis spectroscopy, fluorescence emission, fluorescence lifetime, and time-resolved emission spectra. I successfully synthesized BSA-AuNCs and they were optimized for a research group to be used in Australia to do further studies. From this internship, I gained early laboratory experience and was trusted to undertake more technically advanced projects in the future.
