Disability stole my life as a young professional. Now, I am taking it back.Living with a neuroimmunological condition such as ME/CFS (I’ll spare you the long name, that one really is a mouthful), my life drastically changed in the early months of 2021. Before this time, I was in good health – eating well, keeping a home, exercising regularly and working as an English teacher. So, the COVID pandemic really did throw me a curveball when after an infection I found myself unable to get out of bed and struggling through life. I had to leave my job, and found myself unable to work at all.This could be a very sad story. That is not the story I want to claim for myself. Becoming disabled opened my eyes to the inaccessible world we live in and the discrimination we face. I learnt to appreciate the little things, and to turn my attention to my true passions in ways that I adapt for myself.I could sit here and tell you all about the way I am a great communicator, a team player and natural born leader. Instead, I would say my greatest skills are my resilience in the face of hardship and struggle, my adaptability to situations that will not mould to my needs, my gratitude for the little things, and my compassion for human beings no matter their plight. I use my platforms to discuss, raise awareness and support for those who go through life with chronic illness, disability and neurodivergence. The creative space is where I feel best cocooned – warm and safe. I share my passion for the written word, sharing my stories, poetry, and love of literature.
