About Chloe Tolley

I have recently graduated from the University of Sheffield with a First Class degree in Medical Genetics, Bsc Hons. I was humbled to also be the inaugural winner of the Julia Garnham Award in Clinical Genetics, of which I was awarded due to my commitment and performance within the Julia Garnham Centre. The centre works in collaboration with Sheffield Genetic Diagnostic Service to minimise, and in some cases alleviate, the backlog of cancer patients awaiting diagnoses due to the strain placed on the healthcare services by the COVID-19 pandemic. My role within the centre was to provide pre-karyotype analysis for clinical scientists, thus allowing me to develop my cytogenetic analysis skills whilst also achieving clinical competency in bone marrow karyotyping as awarded by Sheffield Children's Hospital.I am currently enrolled on the prestigious NHS Scientist Training Program in Cancer Genomics where I work and train with Cambridge University Hospital. During this time, I will also be completing a fully-funded, part-time masters in Genomic Science at the University of Manchester, in order to advance my knowledge within the field. As part of my training I will work to develop my expertise in a range of practical laboratory-based techniques and analysis, whilst developing my leadership and management skills ahead of accreditation as a registered clinical scientist. I will cover both cytogenetic and molecular techniques for identifying specific genetic mutations driving cancer progression in order to identify more personalised treatment options. Furthermore, during my training program I am excited to lead a research project in collaboration with the National School of Healthcare Science and CUH. My project will aim to develop the cancer diagnoses pipeline in order to enhance and improve the work done by clinical scientists, either by increasing efficiency or ease of analysis. My key skills include data analysis, leadership and management, and teamwork, which have been developed through university, employment and extra-curricular responsibilities. I was previously Inclusions Officer for the University of Sheffield Chess Society which enabled me to enhance and practice these skills. I also volunteered with Broomhill Homework Club during my final year of university. My role as a volunteer was to assist primary and secondary age children with both academic and personal struggles, whilst providing a safe, educational and enjoyable environment for everyone involved. My volunteer work provided vital experience necessary to establish myself as A-Level tutor.
