With over 30 years’ experience in mental health and wellbeing I have worked with all ages, from secondary school through to end-of-life care. During this time I have worked with people in many different challenging, traumatic and complex circumstances. I am confident to deal with any issue.I trained as a Person Centred counsellor between ‘95 and ‘98 (Nottingham University) and added further qualifications in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Business Coaching over the following years. In the past year I have also undertaken further training in supporting clients with PTSD and complex trauma.

I joined the school initially as a part time Academic Progress Coach and later on was employed full time as a teacher of Sociology and Health and Social Care. 1. Academic Coach - supporting sixth formers and year eleven pupils to address difficulties with underachievement, lack of progress, lack of engagement, etc. This frequently involved supporting them with strategies to improve focus and concentration, generic study and revision skills, long term goal setting and raising aspirations, self esteem and confidence, tackling negative thinking, strategies to improve overall wellbeing. 2. Teacher of Sociology and Health and Social Care, teaching classes of pupils in years seven, ten, eleven and upper and lower sixth form 3. Sixth Form Tutor - holding a daily tutorial lesson with a tutor group of sixth formers. Delivering lessons on Career Development, Higher Education and Personal and Social Development. Providing 1:1 pastoral support to these tutees and supporting them with their progression on to higher education or employment.

University of Derby, Student Wellbeing Service, Project Manager Designed and implemented of a range of new systems, service mechanisms and interventions to enhance the preparation for, and transition to, university for new students and to aid retention and attainment, including: Developed and Project Managed a summer school to assist the preparation for and transition to university of new students with Autistic Spectrum Conditions. Developed 'From Survive to Thrive' a transition management course which supported the development of emotional resilience, personal effectiveness and wellbeing of new university students. Developed a range of interventions to enhance the experience of transition to university including peer mentoring schemes, personal development workshops at university open days and motivational lectures during Induction. 2. Specialist Trainer delivering bespoke training courses to teaching staff in schools including coaching skills training and supporting the development of young people's emotional resilience, personal effectiveness and wellbeing.

Project management and delivery of a range of interventions, programmes, resources etc. designed to raise achievement and increase entry to university. Specialising in working with school and college pupils who reside in the 40% most deprived wards in Derbyshire and Derby City. Tackling issues such as low aspirations, low motivation, lack of confidence and underachievement. This work included: Working in partnership with senior managers in schools to implement intervention strategies linked to school improvement plans which raised the achievement and aspirations of pupils. Developing and delivering staff development programmes for teachers and college lecturers, including raising motivation, building self esteem, tackling the ‘anti-achievement’ culture in schools, creativity, critical thinking skills, learning theories and memory techniques. Designing GCSE and A Level study skills programmes and training staff in the delivery of these. Using up to date research from Cognitive Psychology and Neuroscience to improve memory and revision techniques, personal effectiveness, motivation, confidence, stress management and exam preparation. Project Manager for the ‘Raising the Grade’ GCSE Maths achievement raising initiative. Coaching undergraduate mentors and training them in the use of coaching skills for use with school pupils and college students. Developing peer academic coaching programmes, incorporating up to date coaching theory.

Managed Hardship Fund and Bursary applications. Authored Support and Advisory Service website and developed interactive self-help pages. Co-ordinated open day activities including delivery to up to 200 people. Designed and delivered a range of staff development activities. Career Management Studies lecturer and developer and Module Leader for Mentoring Skills.Designed/delivered a range of accredited mentoring, ambassador and study support programmes. Line management of residential care and ancillary staff. Daily operational management of a 32 bed residential care home for older people.Previous position of Day Service Officer - Provision of individual advice, guidance and information to older people with a range of physical and mental health difficulties. Developing and delivering therapeutic group activities.

Starting initially whilst I was at university I worked as a relief nursing assistant for the trust at Kingsway and Pastures Hospitals and later on at the Psychiatric Wards at Derby City General Hospital. As I was relief staff I could be asked to work on any of the wards on any of the hospitals. However, for the majority of the time I was mainly based on Kingsway House East and West which were both acute admissions wards for adults experiencing mental ill health. As an unqualified nurse my main duties were to spend time with the patients, helping them to feel settled by organising games, activities, etc. and to work 1 to 1 with individual patients, encouraging them to open up and talk about their situations.

I joined Stuart Westmoreland's in 1982 as a Saturday Salesman and stayed with them all the way through school and Sixth Form, joining them full time as a Trainee Manager in January 1887 and then becoming shop manager of the Derby store in 1988.
