I can never resist a challenge. This, in itself, is a challenge but it has driven my whole career and shaped the person that I am:Start your career as a sales representative, taking over Greater Manchester from the record salesperson in the country and keep the business at the same record levels? Bring it on.Work as brand manager for Coca-Cola and create a contoured PET bottle - a world first and, yes, the one you probably handle every day? Overcome the physical and logistical challenges to create something that everyone said was impossible? I’m sure we can find a way.Go to Hong Kong just as it's handing back to China, to work on a business that you’ve never heard of and handle a full brand withdrawal then relaunch within a year? I can do that.Become an IT Director and run an SAP implementation across 11 countries for Nestle? Deliver on time on budget? I’ll have a go.Go to Jakarta and turn around an ailing (failing?) joint venture? Sounds exciting!Launch a new region for The Gap Partnership? I’m your man.Redevelop the negotiation consulting practice and broaden the solutions that we can offer our clients in strategic and tactical negotiation support? How long have I got?Sometimes my willingness to accept a challenge has been my downfall, and certainly at times it has challenged both my family and my health. But it has also provided me with a richness of experience which is an incredible privilege. When I am not pursuing work challenges, there are three things that consume my leisure time. Rugby – which taught me that there was place in sport even for a no-hoper like me, then giving back through chairing, coaching and refereeing junior rugby. Luckily my wife is an even more passionate rugby fan than me!Sailing – which has enabled me to learn new skills and relax by being busy. And a bit shouty sometimes.Classic cars – which takes less of my time but more of my available funds…And what drives me today? Sharing my passion for a challenge, finding people who are equally driven to make a difference, and exploring ways to help them to succeed.The Gap Partnership has given me the opportunities to pursue this passion – first by turning my experience into transferable negotiation practice through the training programs that we deliver, then by working with clients on wide ranging negotiation challenges such as cost price increases, mergers and acquisitions, RFPs, trade union negotiations and strategic sourcing. The challenge continues!
