    My research career began with the study of the Human Factors of Speech Technology, and these two areas (Human Factors and recognition of human activity) are central to most of what I do.Currently, my main research interests relate to three broad areas: 1. Pervasive and Ubiquitous Computing - particularly in terms of how people respond to sensors on them, on the things they use or in the world around them. I've been working a lot on how we can collect data relating to the ways in which people use tools and this leads on to...2. Distributed Cognition - particularly in terms of how people search and examine places, e.g., crime scenes. How people share what they find out links to...3. Social Network Analysis - particularly in terms of how communities of practice emerge in command and control.

    Since 2003 I have been a consortium member of the HFI-DTC (funded by UK MoD). My role has been to focus on aspects of Command and Control, from multi-agency operations to Logistics, and, more recently, to explore novel forms of visualisation (particularly for data outside the 'spatial domain').
