Digital Fabrication Lead For Circular Economies
CurrentBuilding on the momentum we created with SR2, I am currently working with BVN to further integrate computational design and digital fabrication - with a focus on robotics and additive manufacturing (3D printing) - into our design process as we continue our journey towards a new regenerative architecture and design.The positioning should come as no surprise - while the construction industry is worth $360b to the Australian economy (9% of GDP) and employs almost one million people, it also contributes around 40% of greenhouse gasses, and 12% of embodied carbon. It is also one of the least digitised sectors, is heavily fragmented and continues to decline in productivity. Accelerated by the shock of COVID-19, the industry is at a point where current practices are no longer sustainable, and change will happen. This presents a significant challenge with great opportunity. We need at hand the best tools that are available, including Digital Fabrication, to engage with new regenerative practices including those suggested by models for the Circular Economy. I continue to facilitate and engage in transdisciplinary collaboration and research, and currently lead the championing and development of physical making and material experimentation across our practice in support our core purpose – Collective Creativity to Design a Better Future.
