I have been working with sequencing and genomics around the Cambridge area since 1989. This included testing and implementing various DNA sequencing platforms in a high throughput environment. I have been responsible for co-ordinating the production sequencing groups at The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute. I moved to head up the sequencing operations at the MRC EASIH at Addenbrookes hospital in January 2010, the group since being disbanded due to funding issues. I am currently helping out with project management with David Buck's group at the Wellcome Trust Centre for Human Genetics in Oxford, on a part time basis. I am open to job and consultancy offers. My current goal is to help move sequencing from the research discovery environment, to the wider clinical application sphere.Specialties: Sequencing technologies, management of multiple groups, setting up laboratory operations, supplier negotiation.
Listed skills include Sequencing, Genomics, Dna Sequencing, Genetics, and 30 others.

During my tenure I....• Created the original centralised sanger sequencing pipeline, including working with Jim Mulikin, and John Attwood to facilitate data monitoring for maximal accountability and transparency.• Whilst managing the facility I tested and implemented each generation of capillary based technology as they arrived, adapting the monitoring systems as necessary. • Helped to implement two “Next Generation Technology” systems into the current DNA sequencing process (Illumina and 454) and worked to investigate a third (SOLiD). This included liaising with groups within Sanger and competing supply companies. • Presented data from these systems, including keynote lectures, both at external conferences and internally. • Set up two high throughput laboratories, which have delivered all of their tasks on time and within budget.• Economised through the implementation of shift-working, development of new working practices across the sequencing production group, limiting waste due to human error and by developing new techniques to operate instrumentation.• Set up a ‘Black Box’ facility for data capture, where data were collected, and returned automatically to the customer. • Created a loyal, highly integrated and motivated group, most of whom are still working at the Institute.• Implemented Cross-training across the production teams, thus maximising support to all sections within the group as a whole. • Created and maintained links across industry and other academic institutes, which has helped to maintain the Institute’s ‘cutting edge’ position on the world platform.• In excess of 20 publications including a book chapter on the Sanger production process. Numerous public scientific presentations. Show less
