As a trainee with the Springboard Data Science program, I utilize a myriad of computer languages in order to construct highly comprehensive visualizations of and machine learning based predictions with data. Examples of the languages being used are SQL and python. Examples of the libraries and frameworks being used are Pandas, sklearn, tensorflow, numpy.

At Astellas Gene Therapies, the main focus is AAV gene therapy. I create plasmid DNA that forms the capsid and the viral genome that will be used as the potential medication. Plasmid DNA is made using molecular biology techniques such as restriction digestion, ligation, PCR and Gibson assembly. Sufficient quality control on the plasmid DNA is accomplished.

This role involved lab management, equipment upkeep, research methods, and experimental design. Daily tasks included making solutions or buffers, ordering and taking inventory of supplies, upkeeping master budget, and trouble shooting equipment such as pH probes, osmometers, patch-clamp rigs, etc. My role was supervised by the PI, and was in frequent.

This undergraduate research/summer internship was focused on organic synthesis of amino acid transporter inhibitors. Part of the job was the creation of plasmid DNA containing the amino acid transporters, making HEK-293 cells express those transporters through transfection. And ultimately treating those transporter expressing cells with the synthesized.

My team's aim was to test if Beta-Lactam antibiotic, Ceftriaxone, would have a neuroprotective effect on cells faced with excitotoxicity from Glutamate. We transfected HEK-293 cells with Excitatory Amino Acid Transporters.
