The SSMEI is a Scottish Government-led project, funded by the Scottish Government (Marine Management Directorate), SNH, Leader+ and the relevant local authorities. Berwickshire is one of four pilot sites trialling new methods of marine/coastal community and stakeholder based management. I have responsibility for driving this novel project in Berwickshire, and the post involves managing community-based projects on fisheries, tourism development/visitor management and integrated harbour management. I am responsible for budgetary control and reporting. With partners, have set up a local dive tourism association, the first in Europe; grant aided implementation of their marketing plan with project funds; assisted a local harbour trust with business plan; currently aiding them in improving income, and funded installation of quayside derricks; working with fishery partners to improve the sustainability of the local prawn fishery by introducing and funding new fishing practices. Prepared visitor management plan and currently implementing its recommendations; prepared socio-economic review of the benefits of a high quality marine environment as a baseline for future work (both available at www.scotborders.gov.uk/ssmei); prepared consultants' brief to carry out socio-economic research on local fishery. Gave expert written and oral evidence to the Scottish Executive enquiry into the marine environment, January 2007; responded to EU consultations on aquaculture and the European Fishery Fund.Resolved conflicts between marine stakeholders e.g. dive businesses, harbours, members of the community.
