For twenty years I created and implemented programming and services for the blind and visually impaired at Winston Salem Industries for the Blind. This included: an audio book lending library, computer lab with screen reading, screen magnification training, summer camps for blind kids, after school programs, adult support groups, support group for parents of blind kids.In 2017,Blind Power Company was born out of the need to stretch the boundaries of what that world expects from the blind. Our mission was to foster advocacy, Awareness, and Adventure.The name was chosen for exactly what you see and hear. The blind have the POWER, together, to make a better and brighter world.Blind Power! is from a slogan I created to build morale and confidence in the workplace. It was to create a mood or spirit of Look at me! See what I can do!In 2018, we were able to start programming with our inaugural snow tubing event at Winterplace ski resort in west Virginia. Our most exciting event is our Flow Buick/GMC blind driver Experience. Our blind drivers learn the physics and mechanics of driving by starting with a golf cart and then moving to a driver’s ed car. Don’t worry, the Winston Salem police and the Forsyth county sheriff’s departments are the driving instructors. We’ve partnered with the twin city host Lions, the Clemmons Kiwanis and WTOB radio to make this another successful event. The mayor, sheriff and other dignitaries will join sighted guides, family, and friends to drive under the blindfold for a sensory challenge.Blind power Company is on the move. We now have added advancement to our mission. This allows the blind to experience the mobility and opportunity of what a more diverse, equitable and inclusive workforce provides.We're preparing to debut our new employment services. Job seekers will see a real time list of positions that approved job providers will have available.For most organizations, hiring the blind or disabled can be daunting requiring you to step out of your comfort zone.
