Chris has over 15 years’ of experience working as a product development engineer for global companies including Dyson Appliances and John Crane in the UK, and Fisher and Paykel Appliances in New Zealand. He has led reliability improvement projects, developed new concepts, and has particular experience with washing machine wash systems and pumps. At Cranfield University, Chris has been studying for a PhD in Water and Design where he has been investigating Pile-cloth Media Filtration; the mechanisms involved, wastewater solids and phosphorous removal performance, and the effects of the operational parameters. This will help improve wastewater treatment for a healthier environment. Chris is passionate about design, sustainability, and environmental stewardship. He has a degree in Mechanical Engineering BEng (Hons) from Edinburgh University, and an MSc in Green Economy with distinction from Bournemouth University.

I developed wash systems for new washing machines that optimised performance, energy and water consumption. I generated concepts, designed and built prototypes and rigs, conducted tests, produced and presented reports and advised on product design and operation. I designed a washing test bed for accelerated development and worked with external contractors on its construction. As lead engineer for washing machine pumps I led the design and implementation of reliability improvements that cut warranty costs by £1 million a year, resolving the company’s biggest long term warranty issue. This involved working with multiple suppliers and departments, including internationally.It was exciting and a pleasure to work for this highly innovative company in a secure atmosphere that fostered creativity, patiently nurtured ambitious ideas and embraced new product development systems that minimised loopbacks.

I researched and developed new washing machine concepts, developing the washing performance test procedures and Energy Star ‘AAA’ performance rated wash programs for the Contra-rotator washing machine. I also resolved cost down, production and fabric care issues. It was exciting to be involved in a project where we launched a washing machine to market from scratch in four years.
