Leading Ubiquisys was one of the most interesting times of my life!PeopleI love leading people and Ubiquisys had the brightest and the best. When I started, we had 8 people and I was proud that that we only had 150 at the acquisition point whilst still deploying and maintaining some 20 networks. We were 'Technology Pioneers at the World Economic Forum, voted the top Small Cell company for 5 years by ABI Research, received 120 patent awards and were a passionate and driven team.StrategyOur product differentiation was centered on 'smart' radios - self-sensing and organizing, zero-touch provisioning and self diagnostic. We deployed more cells than Ericsson and NSN combined in 2011/2012.Our business model caused chaos with our competitors but gave us very high margins. We designed the hardware but licensed it free of charge to ODMs who were able to sell it direct to the mobile operators. We in turn, delivered our complex software via the cloud directly to the operator so we operated largely at 100% margins. This delivery mechanism also allowed us to securely deliver software to some 4m cells in any 24 hour period. We operated from the start in Asia, the Americas and Europe.We also innovated at an industry level. By working with the big radio OEMS and allowing them to deliver the infrastructure themselves, we made it very hard for any of them to break away from us. In addition, we moved into other areas, outside the OEMs typical areas of expertise - we created the 'Smart cell' with Intel and created/chaired the Femto/Small Cell Forum to create industry consensus.Other CEO functionsI did the normal stuff - raised the money, hired the execs, worked with the investors and led the final sale to Cisco for $310m. I loved almost every minute of it!NextI enjoy mentoring and leading people, strategy, a global view and all things technological.
