With my experiences, I have been able to develop an appreciation that education goes beyond just the transfer of knowledge from professor to student but includes many issues in our society which those of us guiding students need to ensure we are addressing in our work. To this point, in my teaching and service to the university, I have always prioritized creating an inclusive learning environment that centers around the idea of reaching out to each individual student and helping them advance in their own unique way to successfully pursue their goal of becoming a healthcare professional. Within this learning environment, students are able to develop a better awareness of their own world views, communicate with others, and build relationships with one another, which is foundational to the development of cultural competence that can follow the student throughout their career. I believe that by modeling this philosophy to students with our actions and words, we are able to help students become athletic trainers who provide care to their patients in this same way.
