Executive Director And AdvocateUtilities Consumer Advocate Mar 2015 - PresentCalgary, Canada AreaI lead a team of 25 staff that represents the interests of Alberta’s residential, small business, and farm consumers of electricity, natural gas, and water utility services. The team provides consumer education programs, mediation services between individual consumers and utility companies, and intervenes in rate hearings of the Alberta Utilities Commission (AUC) to ensure consumers receive safe, reliable energy services at a reasonable cost. I am responsible for managing an annual budget allocation of over $7.6 million, and have consistently run operational surpluses through rigorous project management and judicious use of external consultants and legal counsel. Since March 2015, results include:o Over $1.2 billion in savings for utility consumers; this is the total value of evidence submitted by the UCA that was cited in AUC decisions over the course of dozens of regulatory rate proceedings annually. During this time, I revised strategy to reduce reliance on consultants and increased the UCA Regulatory Team from 4 to 9 staff. Annual expenditures on the UCA Regulatory Affairs program dropped approximately 20% from $5 million to under $4 million annually.o The UCA call centre received over 166,000 calls, and conducted over 21,000 mediations.o Consumer Education program implemented including: a new fully designed, mobile-friendly website [ucahelps.alberta.ca] that has received over 1.2 million visits; establishment of social media channels; and a direct consumer outreach program that interacts with thousands of consumers annually through visits to dozens of trade shows, conferences, and community events to increase consumer awareness of services available from the UCA. -
