Chris Karp, Director of Global Health Discovery & Translational Sciences at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, leads a team whose mission is to catalyze innovation for the discovery and translation of transformational solutions to global health and development inequity.An immunologist, infectious diseases specialist, and internist, Karp was on the faculty of the Departments of Medicine and Molecular Microbiology & Immunology at Johns Hopkins, and founded the division of Molecular Immunology at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Research Foundation (as Esiason/Bell Professor of Pediatrics), prior to joining the foundation. His academic scientific career focused on defining the mechanisms underlying the regulation and dysregulation of inflammatory responses in infectious, allergic and genetic diseases, with a focus on diseases of children.He received an undergraduate degree (summa cum laude, with high honors in philosophy) from Brandeis University and an M.D. from the University of North Carolina School of Medicine, where he was a Morehead Fellow. He trained in medicine at Brown University and Georgetown University, and then was an NRSA fellow in the Laboratory of Parasitic Diseases at NIAID, and an infectious diseases fellow at Johns Hopkins.A violinist and pianist, his commercial recordings include 3 CDs of the chamber music of Joel Hoffman (Albany Records) as well as a recording of Eric Nathan’s Missing Words III (New Focus Recordings).
