Unit Head (El2)
CurrentI am currently leading a small team in the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) to collaboratively implement the Australian National Suicide and Self-harm Monitoring System. This work is funded by the Australian Government through the Department of Health and in conjunction with the National Mental Health Commission. We work with teams across the AIHW to compile and publish dynamic data visualisations, geospatial analyses, explanatory text and technical notes for suicide mortality statistics, hospitalisations for intentional self-harm and the Australian burden of disease analysis. Our work also supports the analysis of suicide in the Australian Defense Force and first responders populations. The Suicide and Self-harm Monitoring System also supports the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) to embed psychosocial risk factors for intentional self-harm into the ABS annually updated causes of death dataset. We have ongoing research collaborations with major Australian universities, including the development of the National Ambulance Surveillance System with Turning Point through Monash University focused on reporting ambulance attendances for suicide attempts and ideation, symptoms of mental illness and distress, and alcohol and other drug intoxication and overdose. The National Injury Surveillance Unit at Flinders University (an AIHW collaborating unit) has updated birth-cohort analysis of suicide deaths in Australia over time. Development of the Suicide and Self-harm Monitoring System is being evaluated by the University of Melbourne.
