Welcome to the new age of abstract photography!Pareidolia (/pærɪˈdoʊliə/ parr-i-DOH-lee-ə) is the tendency to interpret a vague stimulus as something known to the observer, such as seeing shapes in clouds, seeing faces in inanimate objects or abstract patterns.Common examples are perceived images of animals, faces, or objects in cloud formationsThe word derives from the Greek words para (παρά, "beside, alongside, instead [of]" – in this context meaning: alternative) and the noun eidōlon (εἴδωλον "image, form, shape" – the diminutive of eidos). A 2009 magnetoencephalography (MEG) is a functional neuroimaging technique for mapping brain activity. The study found that objects perceived as faces evoke an early activation of the fusiform face area ( a part of the human visual system that is specialized for facial recognition) whereas other common objects do not evoke such activation. This activation is similar to a slightly faster time that is seen for images of real faces. The authors suggest that face perception evoked by face-like objects is a relatively early process, and not a late cognitive reinterpretation phenomenon.~Art is the eye of the beholder.
