After spending several years abroad, mostly in Russia, as an International Projects Manager, I took up teaching Science on returning to the UK in 2001. Physics has been my main subject and is an exciting channel to inspire young people with ideas and skills that have the power to change the world. As the Duke of Edinburgh recently said, "Anything that wasn't invented by God was invented by engineers". I am keen on encouraging young people into careers in engineering, designing and inventing. Analysing how things are made and how they work is hard if you only interact with electronic devices. I ran a "Heath Robinson Inventors Club" focusing on creating mechanical contraptions, after the style of the artist who started the genre of mad inventiveness popularized more recently by Wallace and Gromit and hope to do more of this kind of thing. I believe that a new generation of creative engineers is vital for the future of Britain and its role in the world.
