Contracted in to render comprehensive Contractor Management during a major construction project at the ABI KZN premises and facilitating ad-hoc Risk Management services

Employed as the Risk Manager at the two ABI Mega plants in KZN e.g. ABI Premier and ABI Phoenix, Phoenix Industrial Park, Durban, which is the Soft Drinks Division of SA Breweries – Comprising of seven Production lines; Two Mega Warehouses; Fleet Management; Two Distribution centres and two waste management / recycling stations in total;During this period I had 3 people reporting to me whom I had to coach, lead and manage.

My duties included but were not limited to the following:- Compilation, implementation and maintenance of Safety, Health and Environmental standards and procedures; Compilation of an Incident diary to record and track SHE incidents on a continuous basis; Scheduled system document review; Incident investigation; Task observations on employees and contractors; Bi-annual Internal systems and compliance auditing of the integrated Safety, Health, Environment and Quality standards, documents and procedures; Contractor control and compliance; SHE system implementation, integration and entrenchment; Auditing of Permit to Work system; Conducting SHE Training to employees and Contractors; Ensuring Induction Training done with all visitors, contractors and scheduled employees; Conducting internal training on the issuing and receipt of a comprehensive Permit To Work system to employees and contractors; Ensuring Hazard Identification and Risk Assessments (HIRA) are done in order to minimise risk of exposure to ABI, employees; the environment; and ensuring business continuation plans in place; Monitoring of aspects and impacts to pro-actively prevent any negative impact on the environment both internal and external to the boundaries of the organisation; Ensuring all legal operating permits are in place and renewed timeously; Liaising with the Department of Labour regarding incident investigations, reporting of incidents and or requests for exemption e.g. Stacking and Storage in and around Warehouses etc; Continuous (daily) verification of compliance to Construction regulations by both employees and contractors; Coaching of employees and contractors on Behaviour Based Safety Initiatives; Waste Management and Recycling; Verification to Legal Compliance as per Legal Register; Ensuring Legal and or System Appointments are in place and updated; Annual review of SHE Risk Assessments, Aspects and Impact Register, Business Continuity Plans, Waste and Recycling contracts.

Sasol Secunda

Managing the total Security aspect at Sasol Polymers PP Division situated within the Sasol Secunda Secondary area. The Occupational Safety Specialist and the Occupational Health Nurse were reporting to me at the time. During this period, the ANC as well as other politically banned organisations became unbanned and the the risk to National Keypoints such as Sasol decreased dramatically. The incumbent Safety Officer at Polymers left the company and my role was combined as Security and Safety Specialist from that point onwards.
